Weekend Harvest

The day I returned from Tennessee I picked over 9lbs of cucumbers. More pickles or at least relish seems in order.





















Today's haul included:

Three types of beets:  Chioggia, Cylindria, Detroit Red










































Seems like a nice garden saute is in order.

Now if we can get some tomatoes to start ripening.

  1. I think everyone is waiting on the tomatoes. My lettuce just up and died this past hot spell. Soon I'll have the tomatoes and NO LETTUCE.

    You got a nice batch of goodies there. I'd love to know how that carrot curled while growing-funny!

  2. Do those knobbly crook-necked squashes work like Butternut or similar? I bet they're not easy to prepare.
    I have my first ripe tomatoes now - a moment I have been waiting for for a long time. Also ate my first Runner beans today.

    Sue, I think you are right about the tomatoes. I thinkk the carrot curled becuase the growing medium is too shallow. While I followed Squarefoot gardening for the setup, I think for the future I will go a bit deeper, perhaps up to 10 inches for the soil.

  4. Hi Mark, in fact they are a summer squash - more closely related to zucchini and prepared about the same. The bumpy ones are a bit more mature than the smooth. Steamed, stir-fried, stuffed, raw in salad, in a bread are all common ways to prepare - no need to peel them. My Lima beans are coming on slowly.

  5. This is a very good looking harvest.
    I know that we are waiting for our tomatoes to ripen as well. This past heat spell sure has taken its toll on things but we should be eating fresh soon.

  6. Nine pounds of Cucumbers--yum! The Beets--not so much. But you have some healthy produce there! How was the salad?
