Jewels of the Garden

Inspired by the wonderful pictures of produce over at Mark's Veg Plot I decided to take some glamor shots from the harvest last evening.

Crooked neck squash

Hot banana peppers

I think the chard may be the best looking

First picking of green beans

Complete harvest from last night.

I started feeling a bit anxious that we won't have much harvest, but I went back to last years' postings and things didn't start really taking off until the end July when the tomato harvest began in earnest. I think we'll be OK. The addition of the crooked neck, zucchini, and pickling cucumbers should help pick up the pace.

The beets aren't bulbing out except for the odd one here or there, though the foliage looks great. Hopefully the fall crop will do better.

Until next time, Keep Digging & Eat Well!

  1. Very pretty! I have to use my black cook top for photographs. I like that it shows some reflections of the produce, but hate that I have to open the photos in Paint and remove the burner rings! The top of the washer works well for a white background, and I can sometimes get really pretty light reflection just by setting a basket on the floor in front of the sliding glass door. I think Villager uses boxes that have been painted black or white on their interiors. Daphne has dark granite counter tops that work well. It's fun to experiment. I should spend as much time on my housework as I do on my camera!

  2. David, you have excelled yourself! These are truly great pictures - and that black background is really effective.
For most of my photos I use a piece of light oak-coloured wood that was left over when we had our kitchen fitted a couple of years ago. I'm thinking now that maybe I should spray one side of it with black paint...
BTW, I'm very honoured to hear you say that I have inspred you, since it was of course YOU who got ME interested in blogging last year!

  3. Thanks Granny! It's an 89 cent piece of posterboard but what a difference it makes! I like that it is flat black seems to make everything else pop, though I like the idea of the reflection.

Mark, I have so much to learn, about gardening, cooking and photography. It is extraordinary to me that such a simple thing makes such a profound difference. We all have something to teach each other which is one of the things that I like about the blogging process.

  4. How "professional" looking-I love it!

It's great to have records to look back on for reference. I've been bad about "journaling" most things in my life, but yup, I know when I'll be expecting things in the garden!
    :)
